Music by Igor Feodorovich Stravinsky (Oranienbaum, June 5 1882 - New York April 6 1971) Libretto by Boris Kochno, after Pushkin's rhymed story The Little House in Kolomna Stravinsky conceived Mavra as an homage to Pushkin, Glinka, and Tchaikovsky, all of whom elegantly "united the most characteristically Russian elements with the spiritual riches of the West." Including two arias, a duet, and a quartet, the score invokes Russo-Italian operatic conventions. Mavra was a distinctly Russian-themed work in which Stravinsky specifically chose to thumb his nose at the Mighty Handful and their penchant for writing operas based on whimsical Russian folk and fairy tales filled with magic and fanciful folderol.
